What happens when life gets hard and powerful fun and happiness feels impossible? Could intentional moments of gratitude, kindness, and joy help you find your next step forward?
In this episode of Inspiring Possible, Christy Pennison welcomes Dave Raymond. Dave is keynote speaker, author, and happiness thought leader. Together they have a meaningful conversation about powerful fun, mental well-being, and finding hope during difficult seasons. Known as the “Hero of Happiness,” Dave shares how becoming the original performer behind the Philadelphia Phillies’ beloved Phanatic gave him an unexpected path through some of the darkest moments of his life.
Dave opens up about losing his mother to a grade 4 glioblastoma brain tumor and the collapse of his first marriage soon afterward. In the middle of that overwhelming grief, stepping into the Phanatic’s personality gave him a break from his pain and helped pull him away from thoughts of self-harm. That experience shaped his lifelong commitment to kindness, gratitude, joy, and the practice he calls powerful fun.
The conversation explores the difference between the fun people typically associate with vacations and free time and the kind of intentional fun that can work “anywhere and everywhere,” including hospitals and funerals. Dave explains his F.U.N. process: fun can be a force, it’s universal, and it requires thoughtful design for the situation.
Dave also offers practical ways to support personal happiness and reach out to people who may be struggling. His seven-day homework challenge, the 3 Ps, invites listeners to prepare with gratitude, pause for a 90-second moment of joy, and post one good thing that happened each day.
“Your happiness, your mental wellbeing. It really is up to you.”
